There’s a perception that Infrared is only good on cloudless blue sky days. In those condition you do get inky black skies but I far prefer clouds. For me the detail that IR brings to cloud formations, even light wispy clouds often makes the image.

The above two images show my ideal clouds, thin wispy cirrus clouds which are often barely visible to the naked eye are captured in all their glory by IR cameras. Couple that with a wee bit of clarity and dehaze in lightroom and you can really make clouds an integral part of the image. So nicer than plain black skies don’t you think?

Craig Castle (or Castlecraig) is a 16th century tower house on the south shore of the Cromarty Firth. It’s crumbling and decaying, bad news for history buffs, good news for IR enthusiasts.
