Showing the “unreality of the real and the reality of the unreal”.
The above quote is from Sir Simon Marsden, he was the UK’s leading exponent of infrared photography. I was initially inspired by his work and have developed a style, using digital photography, that I hope recreates some of the atmosphere and emotion that I gained from his work.
My Equipment
Olympus Em1 Mkii (full spectrum conversion)
Olympus 9-18mm, 40-150mm lenses and various IR filters from 680nm to 950nm.
Adobe Lightroom and Nik Color Efex

Is but a dream within a dream.”

MY APPROACH
Evoking a feeling
I use the RAW in-camera images as a starting point, then work on the images digitally to evoke the feeling or mood that the place gave me at the time of my visit. My work is heavily influenced by the gothic and supernatural writings of people like M.R. James, Edgar Allan Poe and Algernon Blackwood, among many others. The Romans felt that certain places had spirits guarding them, genius loci. It’s that atmosphere, or spirit of place, that I try to capture. The unique properties of infrared light are well suited to this approach.
